How to File ITR Online: Step-by-Step Guide
Income Tax · eComplianceIndia Online · October 2026

Filing your return online is easier when you prepare first. Here is the usual order of steps.
1. Collect your documents
- PAN, Aadhaar and bank account details
- Form 16 (if salaried) and salary slips
- Interest certificates and bank statements
- Capital gains statements and proofs of deductions
2. Check your AIS and Form 26AS
Download your Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Form 26AS from the income tax portal and match them with your records. Differences should be sorted out before you file.
3. Choose the right ITR form
- ITR-1: simple salary or pension income with limited other income
- ITR-2: capital gains or more complex income, without business income
- ITR-3: business or professional income
- ITR-4: presumptive taxation for eligible small businesses and professionals
4. Pick your tax regime
Compare the old and new regime before you file. Our tax calculator can help you see the difference.
5. File and e-verify
After submitting, verify the return (for example with Aadhaar OTP or net banking). A return is not complete until it is verified, and the verification must be done within the time allowed after filing.
